BROOKSVILLE - Jury selection began Monday for the three trials on tap for this week.

Tuesday will open in Circuit Judge Stephen Rushing's courtroom with the trial of Jaime Marquez, who is linked to an August robbery at the top of the Linda Pederson Park tower.
Deputies say Marquez and another suspect accosted a couple at the Hernando Beach park around 10:20 p.m. atop the 40-foot lookout perch. Marquez racked the slide of a gun and pointed it at the victims while his accomplice, Jerae Crussell, searched their pockets, according to reports.

The suspects fled in the victim's BMW, but didn't get far before crashing at Shoal Line Boulevard and Wimberly Court. Both bailed out and jumped into the Weekiwachee River, but Marquez was caught, dripping wet, when he asked for a ride from a neighbor, a report states.

He is charged with two counts robbery with a firearm and grand theft.

Also on trial this week is Joseph McDonald, 28, who is charged with child abuse in connection with an injured 2-year-old.

William Faiella, 27, is scheduled back in court on Thursday for charges of battery on a law enforcement officer.
