Community Center Has Exercise Bikes

BROOKSVILLE - Two new exercise bikes will be unveiled Monday at the Jerome Brown Community Center.

The children who participate in the center's after-school program will get to ride the bikes during a 30-minute exercise period that combines agility drills and physical fitness, said recreation coordinator JoAnn Munford.

"I'm so happy we have these," she said. "I'm delighted."

Thanks to a local grant, the center was able to acquire the exercise bikes and further diversify its program, Munford said.

The teenagers will be grouped into five teams and they will rotate every five minutes - from the bike to the jump ropes to the basketball court, where they will have dribbling, passing and shooting drills, Munford said.

The program is called Fit-N-Fun 4 Kids and will run from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday.

"The bikes are going to stay at the center where we can use them for the program," she said. "We want to try and get them (active) and get away from their computer screens, but make sure they're having fun at the same time."

The Jerome Brown Community Center opened in May 2000 and is located at 99 Jerome Brown Place, across from Tom Varn Park.

It is named after Brooksville native and football great Jerome Brown.

The center is a popular choice for social clubs, athletic programs, drug-prevention education, motivational speaking engagements and various youth-based activities.
