Springstead Claims Unbeaten Battle, 51-38

Published: January 9, 2009

SPRING HILL - Two undefeated squads crowded into the Springstead High weight room Friday night, attempting to stay perfect while shaking off the rust of the holiday break.

The host team succeeded, as the Lady Eagles improved to 3-0 on the season by dropping the Lady Hurricanes, 51-38.

"It was a good win," Springstead Head Coach Mike Garofano said. "We were missing some girls, they were missing some girls. I think both of us kind of limped into the whole meet."

The Lady Eagles claimed first place in six of the 10 weight classes, and recorded six second-place finishes and three thirds.

They benefited from the lack of any Citrus (2-1) competitors at 199-pounds, a class that netted Springstead eight uncontested points.

Jennifer Rosino (130-120 – 250) captured first in that class, followed by teammate Adreanna Marks (90-100 – 190).

That was one of four classes in which the Lady Eagles claimed the top two spots. Lindsay Kuhn (85-105 –190) and Courtney Toles (95-90 – 185) pulled that off at 101.

At 139, Jenn Draganchuck tallied a 115-120 – 235 and Katelin Killory a 115-115 – 230. Karlee Burrows (120-125 – 245) and Brittnee Parson (105-100 – 205) finished 1-2 at 154.

Caroline Monzo added a first at 110 with a 110-105 – 215, as did Olivia D'Acunto at 183 (130-115 – 245).

"I think the entire 101 weight class did well with Lindsay and Courtney," Garofano said. "Courtney is working real well and has gotten her total up quite a bit since the first meet.

"Caroline Monzo is another one; she's been working really hard. Jenn Draganchuck, she's one of the first ones in the weight room and the last one to leave. She's kind of a leader and what we look for.

"And Karlee Burrows is another one working hard on her cleans. She's getting up there now. We'll need it next week. Next week will be a big, big meet."

Garofano referred to the county meet that will take place on Wednesday at Hernando High. Springstead is the two-time defending county champ and figures to go into this year's competition as the favorite.

"We don't normally practice on Saturdays but we're practicing tomorrow," Garofano said. "A Friday meet throws things out of whack. We'll practice Saturday, practice a little Monday and be off Tuesday in preparation for Wednesday's meet.

"It's anybody's game. We'll see what weight classes people end up slotted in. I'll have a hard time picking out our top 15 and I think the other schools will, too. It'll be real exciting and real close."

As for Citrus, Ali Rawls at unlimited posted the best performance of the day with a 170-130 –300.

"I think we did well," Citrus Head Coach Doug Patton said. "We had a lot of girls get their best today.

"They're (Springstead) a good team. I wish I knew ahead of time, I'd be a little better prepared. But they're a good team and it kind of us shows us where we're at, at this point in time."
