ST. PETERSBURG - Normally, when a team finishes a dual meet tournament with a 3-2 record, the coach would be fairly pleased with the result. And in the case of Nature Coast Technical Head Coach Mike Lastra, before this year, that would have probably sufficed.
But this winter, things are different for the fifth-year Sharks' program.
Lastra and his team finally are starting to show signs of putting together a squad that can compete with anyone in the area.
So a 3-2 record in Saturday's St. Petersburg Catholic Duals Wrestling Tournament was not exactly what the Sharks mentor wanted.
"Three and two is OK but after going 4-1 in the Gulf Tournament, we expect more now," explained Coach Lastra. "I don't know, we started off wrestling well this morning, but I think the kids got tired as the day went on. I know the coaches did, so I'm not surprised the kids felt that way."
Originally, the tournament was to have 10 teams, but St. Pete-Admiral Farragut Academy failed to show up. Because of that, the field was split up into three, three-team brackets. Every school wrestled five times Saturday; four of them counting toward the team title and the fifth match was a bonus bout.
In the tournament, NCT went 3-1 as they beat St. Petersburg High (39-32) and Tampa Jesuit (33-29). In their bonus match, the Sharks beat St. Petersburg Catholic (45-26) before they lost to Tampa Alonso (43-28) and New Port Richey-Gulf (50-19).
Lambert, Gracteroly rule
The Sharks had two wrestlers go unbeaten on the day as senior Matt Lambert went 5-0 as he wrestled twice at 145 pounds and three times at 152.
Also senior Shayne Gracteroly went 5-0 at 171 pounds and registered a team-leading three pins.
"Matt Lambert and Shayne (Gracteroly) both did really well today for us," said Lastra. "Matt just got off running cross country and he's unbeaten and Shayne surprised me today by going unbeaten."
On the day, the Sharks collectively went 31-36 with 12 pins as Lambert and Gracteroly each won individual gold medals for the tournament.
Other Shark wrestlers that had winning records on the day included: Scott Cronin, who went 2-1 at 125 pounds and 1-1 at 130. Rockkhem Greene went 3-2 with one pin at 189 pounds and senior Sean Caldwell was 4-1 with one pin at heavyweight.
While ending up over the .500 mark on the day would be happy news, Lastra believes his team has gotten past that point.
"It used to be I could be happy with a winning record, but now we're looking to do better," summed up Lastra. "The kids now have gotten used to winning and now once you start doing that, you want to do better. We go into tournaments now looking to win," he said.
With a tie for seventh at the Kiwanis Invitational and having a 4-1 record at the Gulf Duals, Lastra says that he expects more from his team.
"Next week we've got the Springstead Invitational and I believe that we can get a top-five finish," forecasted Lastra.
