Piper Of Pennsylvania To Perform Jan. 19

The First Baptist Church of Masaryktown welcomes back a longtime and well-known singer, Eddie Piper of Pennsylvania. He has been performing here for some 30 years. He has hosted his own radio program for 13-plus years and has sung with many well-known evangelists. The concert will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 19 at the church. Everyone is welcome.

Carolyn Blaha, her oldest daughter Cathy and hubby Dennis Anderson, other daughter Jennifer and her hubby Ernie Athanasiou and Carolyn's granddaughter Brianna Anderson, with boyfriend Matt Morrow enjoyed a truly old-fashioned Christmas for the holiday week of Christmas at Maggie Valley, N.C., in the Smokey Mountains. The temps got down to 14 degrees with plenty of snow, which made it a nice white Christmas where they enjoyed picking out an 8.5-foot fir tree from a local tree farm. Everyone enjoyed preparing ornaments to decorate the tree, all of which included popcorn strands and construction paper garland. Carolyn crocheted and starched 69 snowflakes. Jennifer made round decorated balls, and Brianna made snow people. They roasted marshmallows and enjoyed the hot tub on the outside deck. A truly enjoyable week for all.

I have a mistake to correct about the Kuka family get-together: The dinner was held at oldest son's David (not Daniel's) and wife Jo-Ann's home. Also, we left out Joan's son Vince and wife Tracey Kuka and their children. Joan has a total of nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. It was a really cool Christmas family get-together.

The annual community meeting is on Sunday, Jan. 18 at the Community Hall on Lincoln Avenue. There will be elections of three offices - Gene Richards is vacating his seat as president; Jim Sikes is leaving his seat as treasurer; and Carolyn Richards is stepping out of her director's seat. Come to the meeting - it's still your community - and your votes count!

Even though the holidays are over, the need is still there for those less fortunate. The Ministry Food Center Pantry of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church still wishes to keep helping the growing amount of needy folks and families. Last year, thanks to all and God, they fed 2,148 folks; and as of July, the numbers have started to rise.

The Tuesday before Thanksgiving, they had 102 - beginning in November, the numbers rose to 363 served. Please don't forget that these numbers increase weekly; any nonperishable goods and money donations will help greatly. For times and details, call 352-796-4066.

Sympathies to the Umsted family on the recent loss of James Umsted Sr., 89 years old, of Land O' Lakes, passed on Christmas Day. He was born in Indiana and came here 38 years ago from Osceola, Ind. For those that remember Old Jim, he started Umsted's Auction House on U.S. 41 and Ayers Road. He was a member of Siloam Lodge 399 F&M, past Worthy Patron O.E.S., member of Sheet Metal Works Union, lifetime member of the Loyal Order of The Moose, and belonged to the American Racing Club. He leaves his wife of 54 years, Violet; two sons, James Umsted Jr. of Land O' Lakes and Randy Umsted of Brooksville, two daughters, Connie Valliana of Tennessee and Mary Ann Moren of Melbourne. Over 100 members attended Masonic Services at Brewers Funeral Home of Brooksville. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to go to the Shriners Hospital of Tampa, Unit 2900, Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
