Depleted Bears Lineup Proves Costly

INVERNESS - This dual meet tournament, at least at the start of the day, had the makings of something Central High School's wrestling team could build on, maybe even the start of something so special it could be singled out as the place where the magic began.
But then, not everything goes according to hopes or plans. And for Central, most everything that had been on that wish list going into the day found a detour during the Rob Hermann Hurricane Cup Tournament at Citrus High School. Which is why Central, 4-1 in duals beforehand, found itself at 6-4 at tourney's end.
"We came in forfeiting one weight class," said Bears' Head Coach Roy Reyes. "But then we got a couple of guys hurt . . . It was an up-and-down day. Some things were drastically going our way, some didn't.
"But it's not how you start the season or how you do in the middle, it's how you do at the end. The kids got some good experience. Now it's a five-week race to the districts."
This isn't the way Reyes preferred to get the race started. The core of his team proved itself up to the challenge, to be certain, with both Vince Ramirez at 140 pounds and Shaun Cadoret at 145 winning all five of their matches on the day.
Also, Danny May (215 pounds) "looked really good" according to his coach, and others like Josh Cleveland (125-130), Robbie Monseger (119), Wayne Snell (125-130) and Ken Supple (135) also turned in solid performances.
But the absence of wrestlers in too many divisions hurt Central in the dual-meet format, and the inconsistent officiating made matters more difficult.
"David Merced (at 103) got knocked out and the referee let the match continue and let the other guy get a pin," Reyes shrugged. "You've got to wonder when the kid's safety comes into play.
"Today, the officiating was not consistent. But you can't control the officials."
The Bears started the day with a 63-18 loss to Belleview with only Ramirez at 140, Cadoret at 152 and May at 215 earning victories, all on pins. They bounced back to defeat Pasco 44-30, with Monsegur at 119 and Matt Redford at 171 getting wins on pins and joining Ramirez, Cadoret, May, Cleveland, Snell and Supple with victories.
Against Fleming Island, the Bears' fortunes went in a different direction, taking with them a dual-meet loss by a 54-20 score.
Nine of Fleming Island's wins came by virtue of a forfeit, including one in the 130 division in a match Cleveland was winning handily. However, he had moved up from 125 after the injury to Merced forced Reyes to shift his lineup, and the Fleming Island coaching staff thought Cleveland was too light.
He was, according to Reyes, officially one-tenth of a pound too small, which caused him to forfeit the match.
"I just thought that was bad sportsmanship on the part of Fleming Island," Reyes said.
The Bears were able to handle a short-handed South Lake squad, winning 58-12, to finish 2-2 in pool play duals. That put them up against Lemon Bay in the crossover dual, each team at 2-2 during the tournament. Lemon Bay got the win, 43-24.
"Like I said, it was a good experience for the kids," Reyes summarized, adding, "And I really want to thank our fans and parents for their support."
A good experience? Maybe. But it might have been a whole lot better.
