BROOKSVILLE - With the holidays winding down, local government resumes its normal slate of events.
In fact, the first week of 2009 kicks off with several meetings.
•The Hernando County value adjustment board special magistrate hearings will begin at 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5 in the board of county commission chambers, room 160, Government Center, 20 N. Main Street, Brooksville.
•The monthly meeting of the Veterans Round Table will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, at the American Legion Post 186, 12091 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville.
The meeting is open to all post commanders or their representatives.
The Veterans Round Table meets the first Monday of every month to discuss and review any issues or events that effect veterans and their families.

•The first county commission meeting of 2009 will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6 at the Hernando County Government Center, 20 North Main St. in downtown Brooksville.

•The Hernando County Port Authority Board will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, at the Jenkins Creek Recreation Building in Linda Pedersen Park, 6340 Shoal Line Blvd., Hernando Beach.
The agenda includes discussions on the Hernando Beach dredge, fishing tournaments and the Rogers Park dock replacement.

•The Community Initiative Team appointed by county commissioners will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8 in the 4th floor conference room, county administration, room 460, Hernando County Government Center, 20 N. Main St., Brooksville.
The CIT's goal will create a strategic plan to address concerns affecting residents in the largely unincorporated neighborhoods of Hernando County.
The January meeting will address progress of improvements to south Brooksville. The team consists of representatives from various departments of county government and city of Brooksville staff who work with south Brooksville community residents.
The meeting is open to the public.

•The Hernando County Aviation Authority will meet at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8 at the new airport office at 15800 Flight Path Drive, Brooksville.
This is a new location for Aviation Authority meetings.
The Aviation Authority usually meets the second Thursday each month. County commissioners appoint members who review and make recommendations on airport-related issues in Hernando County.

•Hernando County Government Broadcasting will air the Great Brooksvillian ceremony and reception honoring Dr. Paul Farmer on Bright House Channel 622 and on the Web at 1 p.m. and 10 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5 and at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6.
Farmer, who grew up in Brooksville, is a physician dedicated to treating tuberculosis and HIV-Aids in third world countries. He was honored with the Great Brooksvillian award at events held on Dec. 13.
