Hernando and the two other counties in Congressional District 5, could see some 9,600 jobs from President Barack Obama's stimulus plan, signed into law this week.
The $789 billion plan, formally called the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, is estimated by the White House to create or save 3.5 million jobs nationwide during the next two years. More than 90 percent of those jobs should be in the private sector, according to a White House release.
Here's how the jobs break out for the Tampa Bay area by Congressional district:
• District 5 (includes Pasco, Hernando, Citrus) 9,600 jobs.
• District 9 (includes Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas) 8,200 jobs.
• District 10 (includes Pinellas) 7,100.
• District 11 (includes Hillsborough, Pinellas) 8,200 jobs.
• District 12 (includes Hillsborough, Polk) 8,800 jobs.
In a prepared statement, Gov. Charlie Crist said he would make sure Florida "makes the best use of our share" of the money.
"At a time when Florida is facing historic economic challenges mirrored across the country, these federal stimulus dollars will help Florida meet critical needs in education, transportation and Medicaid," Crist said.
