BROOKSVILLE - The county has done its part in assessing the contamination at the old Department of Public Works site, and the next move is up to the state.
Creative Environmental Solutions Inc., the consultant coordinating the testing and sampling at the long-vacant downtown Brooksville facility, sent its final site assessment report Wednesday to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
That agency will now spend the next several weeks reviewing the reams of paperwork and issue an opinion on whether the consultant's report is complete.
If so, then the final cleanup stage can begin, Assistant County Engineer Gregg Sutton said.
In all, Creative addressed 32 "areas of concern," that were the target of soil testing and well drilling.
Here are some highlights of the report:
•Stained pavement and soil were found beneath and around a used oil collection container outside the fence near the northeast corner of the property. The soil was dug up and the container removed.
• The upper two feet of soil surrounding a manhole on the property was removed and replaced with clean backfill.
• Arsenic was found in all of the shallow soil samples tested. No levels exceeded the soil cleanup target level for commercial-industrial exposure.
•Additional assessment of the Floridan aquifer is not warranted.
• Additional deep soil assessment is not recommended.
