Bears Advance Seven to Regionals

DUNEDIN - Despite not having anyone win an individual district title Saturday in the Class 2A, District 5 wrestling tournament Saturday at Dunedin High School, Central Head Coach Roy Reyes was pleased with the way things turned out for his somewhat inexperienced team.
Missing a wrestler at 103 pounds along with veterans Vince Ramirez and David Supple, the Bears had seven grapplers qualify for the Class 2A, Region II meet next weekend at Poinciana High in Kissimmee.
"It went pretty good and we had a bunch of young kids in the lineup," said Reyes.
Central finished fourth as a team in the 9-team tournament and had seniors Shaun Cadoret (145 pounds) and Danny May (215), both make the tournament finals.
Cadoret lost his final 6-3 to Springstead's Shawn Landgraff while May was pinned in 36 seconds by Gideon Levy of Dunedin.
Besides his two seniors, Reyes had five others advance.
Wayne Snell (125) and Kenny Supple (130) both finished in third place while Robbie Monsegur (119), Josh Cleveland (140) and Zach Martin (171) all finished in fourth place.
"A lot of our young guys stepped up today," said Reyes. And a good example of that he said was freshman Cleveland. "He was our sixth option at 140 at the beginning of the year and was third string at 119."
"But he drank a lot of water all day to make weight and now he's going to regionals."
And with 10 wrestlers returning, along with Ramirez next year, Reyes said that the upcoming off-season will be one of a lot of work for his team.
"We're headed in the right direction with our core group of guys," he said. "We had some pleasant surprises, but now we've going to keep them wrestling year-round. Next year we'll stay in 2A, but I think some schools are going to be moved out of our region and district. We just have to put some muscles on these guys and keep them hungry.
"This year was just bad because of the injuries we had," said Reyes. "We brought 13 guys and you really want all 13 to make it to the next tournament."
