BROOKSVILLE - Sparton Corp. announced Friday it had cut 6 percent of its workforce - including 24 employees at its Hernando County location.
Sparton is located at 30167 Power Line Road, east of Interstate 75.
The employees were notified of the job cuts Friday, said spokeswoman Erin Millerschin.
"This difficult decision is necessitated because of the economic and competitive challenges we are facing in the marketplace," said Cary Wood, chief executive officer at Sparton. "Our aggressive goal continues to be to return this company to profitability and long-term success."
The company is aiming to reduce operating costs to improve its "competitive position for the future," he continued.
Sparton has six facilities in the U.S. and Canada. The job reductions affected four of them, according to a media release.
The annual savings, including wages and benefits, are estimated to be $4.1 million. An additional $600,000 in annual savings also will occur through a reduction in outside contract work, Wood said.
Sparton is a broad-based supplier of electronics. It does business in aerospace, medicine and government defense, Millerschin said.
The company is headquartered in Jackson, Mich., and was founded 109 years ago, according to its Web site.
Sparton employs about 1,000 workers.
