BROOKSVILLE - City police have dropped their union representation.

Records show Thursday's vote was unanimous to break off ties with the Pinellas County Police Benevolent Association. Officers narrowly adopted the union about a year ago by a margin of one vote.
Police Chief George Turner said the vote is evidence that the city is supportive of the police department and that officers are generally happy with their circumstances.

In related news, Hernando County deputies have voted to forgo all merit and cost of living raises in this upcoming budget year.

Deputy Steve Klapka, president of the union, said it was an obvious choice in this budget year between skipping raises or facing layoffs.
