BROOKSVILLE - The city may demolish a decrepit former VFW headquarters and bill the property owner.
The nearly 50-year-old building on three acres at 20021 VFW Road has been vacant for many years and is now a safety hazard, city staffers wrote in a memo to the city council.
The building's owners live in San Jose, Calif., and have not responded to requests to fix the problem, so staffers are asking the council for permission to pay as much as $16,000 to tear down the structure and bill the property owner. The city could put a lien on the property if the owner doesn't pay, city staff said.
The council will consider the request at its next regular meeting, slated for 7 p.m. Monday at City Hall, 201 N. Howell Ave.
