BROOKSVILLE - West Hernando Head Coach Elizabeth Dofka said her athletes didn't realize the meet was on the line heading into the 4x400 relay.

Still, she said he emphasized to her girls that they had to win the final event Wednesday at the Central High Bears' Den.

Actually, they didn't. All they needed was a second-place finish, which is exactly what they got. That was good enough to give the Golden Eagles a one-point victory over Parrott, 56.5-55.5.

"They did good," Dofka said. "We're still looking. We're trying different girls in every event. They did very well. I'm very happy."

West Hernando, which lost to Challenger in last week's season-opening meet, spread the wealth, with four different girls earning first-place finishes.

Samantha Evans took the long jump with a 14'3 1/2" leap, while Megan Jordan took the 55-meter hurdles in 10.28.

Genesia Lee came in first in the discus (58'5") and second in the shot put (27'9 1/4"). Also, Kassie Whitmore collected a first in the 800 (2:58).

For Parrott, Tanna McDaniel won the high jump (4'2") and 400 (1:10.07). Ebone Plummer's did the same in the shot put (31'5 1/4") and Ashley Sims in the 1,600 (6:18).

Bre Mobley, Chariah Owens, Aliyah Ousley and Tierra Ousley ran a 54.70 for the top spot in the 4x100, and Savannah Brooks, Ashlee Cavanaugh, Aliyah Ousley and Sims duplicated that placing in the 4x400.

"We're still trying to get a feel for everything," Parrott Head Coach JoSandra Maner said. "We're mixing things up. That wasn't the 4x1 we ran last week, that wasn't the 4x4 we ran last week. Those were not the same high jumpers. We're trying to straighten it out for the county championship.

"We had a really slow start. But I think they did good. I'm happy with what they did today."

The person who may have hurt Parrott's cause the most didn't run for West Hernando, but rather J.D. Floyd. The small second-year squad finished a distant third with 14 points.

However, Wilena Little snagged first-place honors in the 100 (13.29) and 200 (28.03), both times beating out two girls from Parrott. Take away Little and the Lady Leopards win the meet.

"She did awesome," J.D. Floyd coach Rob Walden said. "It definitely makes everyone work a little harder in practice. We have to focus on individual accomplishments because our numbers are low. I'm happy. We're scoring more points this year."
