BROOKSVILLE - Brooksville police say they have the man responsible for the murder of Isiah Collins on May 23.
Franklyn Jamaal Spears, 26, of 7478 Mohawk Trail, was named as the suspect on Friday and is currently in federal custody waiting for extradition to Hernando County.
Collins, 29, was gunned down at the corner of Buena Vista and Roberta avenues shortly after midnight. A passerby driving on Broad Street heard the shots and called authorities after seeing a suspicious car speed away from the scene.
The caller found the victim lying in the T-shaped intersection, barely moving and bleeding from the head. Medics attempted to revive Collins, but he died minutes later at Brooksville Regional Hospital.
Investigators are still establishing a motive for the alleged murder, but they say the shooting is drug-related.
Records show Spears was convicted in 2003 for possession of cocaine in Kentucky, but he has no convictions in Hernando County.
A press release does not elaborate on what led detectives to Spears. Police Chief George Turner did not return messages seeking comment.
Attempts to reach Spears' family were unsuccessful.
