BROOKSVILLE - Quite simply in the Hernando County Middle School Athletic Conference football opener at Central's Bears' Den Tuesday night, one team came ready to play, the other didn't.
In an uncharacteristic display host West Hernando turned the ball over four times and could not sustain any offense against visiting Parrott Middle School, losing 54-0.
The Leopards, who have captured six of the past seven county championships, fumbled away their first snap -- after a 31-yard gain.
But from that point on, Head Coach Dwayne Mobley's team focused at the task at hand.
The Purple and Gold defense permitted West Hernando to 21 plays totaling a minus-22 yards.
The Golden Eagles' lone first downs arrived via personal fouls – one in each half.
Meanwhile, after the opening series fumble, Parrott scored seven times in its next eight possessions - the other time it was stopped at the 1-foot line -- in pounding the Golden Eagles.
The win was Parrott's 14th in a row since Sept. 12, 2006's 20-6 setback to West Hernando at the Bears' Den.
"This was the hardest team we've ever played," lamented West Hernando Head Coach Genard Hudson afterward. "Bottom line, they (Parrott) came to play and our guys folded after the second series. I've gotta take my hat off to Dwayne (Mobley), he had his guys ready."
Biggest difference?
"Man-for-man we can play with those guys," insisted Hudson. "But our O-line has got to create some holes for our backs. To me, those guys did not perform to their capabilities."

A plethora of standouts

For the defending county champions, who led 32-0 at the intermission, Jeremiah Jackson led the Purple and Gold with 102 yards on six carries including two touchdowns (32, 6 yards).
Quentin Adams chipped in five carries for 97 yards and also scored once (22 yards), while starting quarterback Tyrail Hawkins completed the first-half scoring with a 10-yard scamper.
Neither Jackson nor Adams touched the ball in the second half.
"Offensively, we did good," chimed the 14-year-old Adams. "We came ready to play and the O-line did a great job so did our quarterback (T. Hawkins)."
How critical was the victory?
"It felt great," responded Adams. "It's always nice to win your first game, especially against a rival school."
Despite a running clock midway through the third quarter, Tyrail Hawkins (1-of-5 passing) connected with Robert Besser on a 11-yard touchdown pass while back-ups Mondrell Brown (7 yards) and O'Mar Hawkins (9 yards) each scored once.
"Hey, we had some butterflies coming in. But credit goes to the O-line and D-lines, they did a great job," pointed out Hawkins, referring to his team's 251 yards of total offense compared to West Hernando's negative production. "The blocking was there, too. I think I still have to work on my passing."
Parrott also helped itself by converting 6-of-7 two-point conversions.
Defensively, Darren Hambrick led a unit that registered five sacks while Jackson, Aujuwan Brown and Marcus Neal all recovered West Hernando fumbles. Sonnie McCleary-Genberg also added an interception.
Hambrick, who had one bone jarring sack, and chipped in two touchbacks as a place-kicker noted the difference.
"Our D-line came out tonight," smiled the 14-year-old Hambrick. "I thought we overpowered 'em."
From the opposing sideline, Coach Mobley improved to 42-11 lifetime, behind his largest-ever margin of victory (54 points).
The previous mark was 48 points in 2007 against Powell.
"West Hernando did not fold," countered Mobley. "They worked hard at what they were doing. I can't take all the credit; our coaches just had our kids ready all week.
"Our guys came ready to play," he added. "What pleased me the most was it wasn't just the offense, or just the defense. We preached to kids that we better be ready before we get there or we're gonna get beat. If someone beats us, we make their season."
