BROOKSVILLE - With the start of the cross country season beginning Saturday with the Zak Lukas Memorial Invitational race at Hernando High, local teams Springstead and Central had a good showing.
With the event drawing 18 teams from around the area, Springstead had four runners place in the top 36 to finish in fifth place in the team standings.
For Central, two runners, Mikayla Bogulski and Anna DeAngelis, wound up in the top 30 to give the Lady Bears a sixth-place finish.
The best individual finish from Central came from Bogulski, who ran the 5K race in a time of 21:29.97.
The other two Hernando County schools were further down the list as Nature Coast Technical came in 13th while Hernando was 16th.
For Joel Myers, a second-year coach for Springstead after spending 30 years as a football coach, his team's showing Saturday was a surprise. "Most of the team is only second-year runners and today our fourth, fifth and sixth runners ran better than they ever had before," Myers said.
The best Lady Eagle finish came from junior Jaclyn White, who ran a time of 21:27.53 and surprised herself.
"I like the course," White said. "It's a fast course and I had a goal to beat the time I had last year and I did."
White started in track and field, running the 400 and 800-meters, as well competing in long jump, before starting cross country this year.
"I started track as a sprinter and now cross country helps me a lot in the 800," White said.
Both Myers and Nature Coast boys coach Armen Merjanian thought Saturday's race was a nice surprise in starting the season.
"To start out where we were last year in the district and run those times now, I think it's a great way to start the season," Merjanian said.
"Our district is brutal, with Ocala-Vanguard, Wharton, South Lake and Land O' Lakes," said Myers. "But it's not hard to coach with these kids. I've got high expectations for them."
