Shocking Curriculum
As a mother of seven grown children and a Christian, I was shocked to find out that abstinence is the only way to prevent pregnancy. It is the most desirable way.
However, judging from the number of teen pregnancies, it isn't working!
No one wants our school to teach the graphic use of all the other means of birth control, but they certainly need to be made aware of them. If for no other reason than to make sure they are doing every thing possible to protect themselves against sexually transmitted diseases.
Teenage sex is taking place and no amount of preaching is going to stem the tide. Our school board needs to wake up and give our kids as much age-appropriate information available.

Re: "City Ponders Fees for Emergency Services" in the Sept. 14 edition of Hernando Today.
Don't these politicians get it yet? Florida residents can't stand any more "hidden" taxes, and that is what this fee proposal represents.
Who in the world pays the insurance premiums? You would be foolish to think the insurance companies won't pass on the cost. Our premiums are outrageous enough, without Brooksville (or anyone else) trying to generate more income, when they apparently cannot manage their own current funding.
No doubt things are tough for everyone, but I don't see people standing in line to give me more income just because I am having a tough time making ends meet. All I can do is control my spending. A unique concept, isn't it?
And who is "everybody wants to have the resources to deliver the high level of service that citizens want," which is what Chief Musgrove can easily say since he no doubt is sitting on a great pay and medical plan. In the end, the taxpayers are going to be hit for what they already are paying for.

User Fees Unfair
I guess if we trade lower taxes for a park usage fee, then some kids will miss out on league sports and this is OK. I think not! Families are already cutting expenses to pay for everyday living, and now with the proposed added fee to league sports, this will be next.
I know because I help run the Brooksville soccer league and parents are already asking for help in paying the league fee. Just think if you have several children and add the fee for each one to play, it can add up quickly. League sports - be it football, soccer, baseball, cheerleading or any other - is needed in the community for children to learn about sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork and self-esteem. Friendships for life are formed, and families have more of a feeling of community worth. It is an opportunity for kids to hone skills for school play and the opportunity to receive a scholarship to advance their education. Thus, bettering their community by being better educated, better paid, becoming community leaders and, yes, paying more taxes.
It has long been proven that children who play sports, stay in school and make better grades than if they had not. So, if we want to help the future of our community, don't add fees for parks that are already being paid for by our tax dollars. Help keep the children of our community in sports and keep them off the streets.
