BROOKSVILLE - Hernando County public schools have produced two National Merit Scholarship semifinalists this year.
The two finalists are Kyle Boutin and Michael Ogren, both seniors at Central High School in Brooksville.
Across the country, 16,000 students were named semifinalists in the 54th annual scholarship competition.
Finalists will now continue in the running for 8,200 National Merit scholarships, announced in the spring.
Students gain semifinalist status by having an outstanding academic record throughout high school, being endorsed and recommended by their high school principal and earning SAT scores that confirm the student's earlier performance on a qualifying test.
Students also must submit a detailed scholarship application, write an essay and participate in leadership and community activities.
More than 1.5 million students entered the competition by taking a qualifying test last year, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corp.
