LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Cloaked Agenda

I'm a proud American of Africa descent, proud veteran, proud Republican and proud resident of Hernando County. I read the letter from Mr. Colombo in the Sept. 10 edition of Hernando Today. He's right; Sen. John McCain is a true "American hero" and you're also right that he's earned it.

Now, Mr. Colombo, I ask you to close your eyes and imagine these few of many examples I offer you to take in consideration:

•Being an African-American child whose heroes are few and far between unless it's in the sports arena, only to have your one hero assassinated because of the color of his skin. Then have McCain use poor judgment by voting against the national holiday to honor his memory.

•Katrina, where was McCain's "courage" to come out and make a statement on the horrors witness by the world? Now he needs votes to become our next president, so what does he do? Goes to the scene of the crimes and insults the people's intelligence by offering a half-hearted apology and empty promises to the hurricane victims.

•Choosing a running mate who's a heartbeat away from becoming the commander in chief of the most powerful country in the world. I'm not sure that Obama is the answer. However, eight years of President Bush's continued failures, hmmm? Admitting voting with him 90 percent of the time, closed-door fundraising meetings and smiling with him on the White House steps, accepting his endorsement.

So, Mr. Colombo, don't insult our intelligence with your cloaked agenda. We're smart enough to make an intelligent decision on our own without being hoodwinked into continued failure. We are the United States of America, where today we are judged by the content character ... not our skin!

Rall Revealing

Once again, I must thank the editors of Hernando Today in publishing the most recent column of Ted Rall to show the good people of Hernando County just how crazy liberals have become, especially when it comes to Gov. Sara Palin.

Not only does Rall continue to follow the standard liberal line of personal attacks on the governor pertaining to her pregnant 17-year-old daughter, and then pretends to show compassion about the plight of teenage pregnancy, but then he comes out and says that all unmarried pregnant teenagers should be forced to have an abortion.

And here I thought it was liberals who were all for personal choice and the mean old Republicans were all about taking rights away. Oh, was I ever mistaken!

Of course, this is not the first time Rall has made such callous, thoughtless statements, and I doubt it will be the last.

So, once again I must thank the editors of Hernando Today for showing the true face of liberalism to the people and hope they continue to do so in the weeks and months to come.

They Forgot

Sept. 11 always reminds me of all the men and women who died on that terrible day seven years ago. I donate to the fire department, especially when they have the "boot" going around.

I feel terrible for all the "brothers" they lost that day, so, why don't they?

As I was traveling home today, I passed the fire department on Mariner Boulevard in front of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, and noticed that the fire department, of all places, didn't lower its flag today, and this outraged me!

They have the stickers on the ambulances and fire trucks that say, "We Will Never Forget." Well, they sure did forget today, didn't they!

If my grandfather were alive today (a retired fire chief), he would have been ashamed to think that the fire department couldn't do the simple task of lowering the flag to pay respect to the firefighters who gave their lives on the horrible day.
