LECANTO - Hernando High running backs Champ Lumdsen and Alvin Delaine combined for 235 yards on the ground and four touchdowns to lead the Leopards to a 33-13 victory over the Lecanto Panthers on Friday night.
The win (1-7) keeps Hernando (3-4) in the running for the Class 3A, District 6 title.
"Keeps us in the hunt," Hernando Head Coach John Palmer said. "Gives us a little life."
The Leopards' first score game came on a fourth-and-inches on the Lecanto 33-yard line. Lumdsen took the handoff on the right side and raced untouched for the score.
Just over two minutes later place kicker Josh Harvey connected from 42 yards away to put Hernando up 10-0 with 3:02 left to play in the first quarter. Harvey also connected on a 47-yarder early in the fourth quarter.
An 81-yard pass from Lecanto's Addison Holstein to Timothy Jones set up the Panthers' only touchdown in the opening quarter. Both teams struggled in the second quarter before Lecanto's Mike Burnett drilled a 40-yard kick as time expired to even the score at 10 heading into the locker room.
The Panthers opened the second half with a 13-play drive that culminated in a 22-yard field goal and their first lead of the ball game.
The lead, however, lasted about five minutes before the Leopards rolled off 23-straight points.
"Our offensive line stepped it up in the middle of the third quarter and kind of took over a little bit," Palmer added.
Lumdsen took another fourth-down carry 31 yards for a touchdown and the point after by Harvey made it 17-13.
A minute later Delaine scored his first touchdown on a 27-yard interception return. He would later score on a 90-yard interception return for the game's final score.
The Leopards lost three fumbles in the game but intercepted Holstein five times in the game. Corey Thomas had two picks, while Harvey had one.
