DADE CITY - Saturday in the Florida Pre-State race held at Little Everglades Ranch in Dade City, the importance of the meet could be shown by the number of schools and runners who ran in the 5K race.
More than 80 school and 2,000 runners took part in the race that comes one month away from the state meet which we be held on the same course.
And while meet organizers had some trouble with both individual timing and team scoring, both Central and Nature Coast Technical learned from being in the race.
"We hadn't run here before and I think it was extremely important to be here today," said Central coach Erin Courtney. "I think the girls needed to get the feeling of being in such a large meet."
With the meet dividing schools into two races, both Central and NCT failed to get anyone into the top 20 as an individual or a team in the small schools (Class 1A-2A) race.
"It's a tough course and there's lots of good people out there," said Central sophomore Mikayla Bogulski.
Due to a timing error, Bogulski at first was timed in over 41 minutes, while her father timed her at 21:15.
That ended up being a problem in the large school race as the times of all the runners had yet to be posted at press time Saturday.
But Central coach Courtney was happy about the way her team raced Saturday.
"I had one girl do her PR (personal record) and the rest of them were close to theirs," Courtney said. "They did what I expected. They were running with everyone else. They weren't being left behind. We were all in the middle of the pack or maybe a little ahead of it."
With one month left until the state meet, Bogulski said that the important part left in the season is making the state meet.
"I just want to make the state meet, besides I'm going to have some close competition, based on what I saw today," Bogulski said.
In the small school race, NCT finished in 16th place with 426 points. The Lady Sharks were led by a 61st-place finish by Brittany Aemisegger and an 82nd-place finish from Solianna Herrera.
