Gallery Offers Burst Of Color For Fall

Published: October 14, 2008

BROOKSVILLE - There isn't much leafy color around here come fall, but there are plenty of vibrant hues on City Hall's walls.

The City Hall Gallery's fall exhibit displays the work of local artists featuring a spectrum of shades and media.

Among the highlights is David Rivera, a native of Puerto Rico and a self-taught painter specializing in landscapes. Rivera, like the acclaimed Highwaymen artists, was inspired by Florida landscape painter A.E. Backus, and has a passion for the Florida of yore, before development took over, according to a biography.

"He's capturing the colors of Florida, but also you can see the Spanish influence because the colors are so bright," said gallery Coordinator Rhonda Hancock.

Few of the other exhibitors seem to shy away from color. Witness the bright landscapes in oil by Paul O. Shaskan of Spring Hill, and the ancient art of batik by Julie Komenda of Woodland Waters.

Also featured in the fall exhibit: paintings by Richard Duncan and Mary B. Davis; the photography of Raymond Earl Eckert; handmade truck and tractor models by Wayne Holder; pastel and chalk drawings by Vincent Yurich; and the watercolor work of Joan Swetland.

The exhibit also features new works from the Just Poets poetry club, Spring Hill Camera Club and local quilters. Dr. Adel Eldin has loaned Islamic art from his collection.

The fall exhibit runs through Nov. 7. City Hall is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
