BROOKSVILLE - For the Nature Coast Technical Sharks football team, they went into Friday night's homecoming game against Lecanto missing their top running back in Tevin Drake.
And while some people were wondering how the Sharks would replace the rushing (761 yards) and scoring (9 touchdowns) that Drake had this year, the unbeaten 5-0 Sharks had more than enough talent as Antwan Story rushed for 115 yards and one touchdown while freshman L'Tevin Williams ran for two touchdowns as NCT beat Lecanto 29-0 in a Class 3A-District 6 contest.
"We were down three starters tonight so we had some young kids step up tonight and fill in some positions," said Sharks' Head Coach Jamie Joyner. "We also made some plays on defense to stop them and I was real happy about the way we played."
With the win, NCT also improved to 2-0 in 3A-6.
Panther drought continues
The Sharks began their shutout of the Panthers, who have now lost 12 straight games against Hernando County schools and are 1-5 on the year, on the second play of the game.
Story took a handoff and went around right end 70-yards for the touchdown and set the tone of the game as the Sharks outgained Lecanto, 381-14.
Williams scored later in the first quarter on a 16-yard scoring burst with 3:35 left in the quarter.
Danny Colon, who made the first point-after, missed the second one for NCT, 13-0.
Then three plays after that score, the Nature Coast defense came through to score a safety as Britt Langley dropped Panther QB Jimmy Hamrick in the end zone, 15-0
In the final minute of the first half, NCT quarterback C.J. Baker drove the Sharks 53 yards on six plays as he hit Michael Fields with two passes and Howie Williams with one that set up a one-yard touchdown run by Williams on the final play of the first half, 22-0.
The second half was not much better for Lecanto as on their first possession, punter Mike Burnett mishandled the punt and the Sharks recovered it on the Panther 5.
Three plays later, Baker connected with Eric Williams on a 5-yard pass for the score, 29-0.
"They did exactly what we wanted to do," said Lecanto head coach Ron Allan. "They capitalized on our mistakes. Offensively we would move the ball, then we would do something silly like have penalties, fumbles and things we just could not overcome."
The final statistics were hugely in the Sharks' favor. Lecanto gained one yard on 33 carries running the football and had just 14 yards of total offense while failing to make any of the nine third down conversion chances they had in the game.
Nature Coast finished with 264 yards rushing, 117 passing and getting 20 first downs to only three for Lecanto.
After the game, Joyner said he was happy the way his two quarterbacks and two running backs preformed. Baker ended the night completing 5-of-7 passes for 82 yards and a touchdown while JuJuan Story ran for 64 yards and threw for 26.
"We try to be as athletic as we can at QB," Joyner said. "And C.J. and JuJuan are a couple of great athletes. And we were happy that Antwan got to carry the rock a little more tonight."
