BROOKSVILLE - For 11 minutes Tuesday night at Tom Fisher Memorial Stadium, visiting Powell Middle achieved what no one else had been able to accomplish this fall — keep Parrott off the scoreboard.
The Purple and Gold, who came in averaging 58 points after two games, was held scoreless until midway in the second period.
That's when the hosts disdained their normally potent ground attack by going upstairs.
Eighth-grade quarterback Tyrail Hawkins hurled two touchdown passes — 31, 75 yards — in a span of three minutes in the second quarter to break open the tight contest en route to a 32-0 win over the visiting Panthers.
"We knew we had to keep it inside the tackles to have any chance," expressed Powell Head Coach Ron Blackwell, who was not disappointed with his team's efforts. "They have so much speed; it'll catch up with you."
Positives?
"No. 28 (Joey Berrios) had a tremendous game for us," said Blackwell. "He hit anything that wore purple. And we got a guy over 100 yards rushing (Rashad Hart). That's great, but we've got nothing to show for it on the scoreboard. I wanted a touchdown against these guys.
"Up front we played well," he added. "Our plan was to keep the ball away from their fast guys. Unfortunately, we didn't capitalize on a couple loose balls on the turf. We left some tokens out there."
Ex-Gator standout, Parrott Head Coach Dwayne Mobley, thought his team responded to a fired up Panther squad.
"First of all, we've got to keep our guys from getting in trouble," he said. "Again we sat out a couple more kids. They've got to learn. Thank goodness our assistant coaches again did a terrific job of getting our kids prepared to play."
Overall?
"Give Powell credit, they were confusing our O-line," recalled Mobley. "They were clogging us up the middle. What tonight showed was that if we need to throw the ball, we can. A couple early touchdown passes kinda opened things up for us."
Beat goes on
With the win, Parrott improved to 3-0 this fall, and claimed its 15th straight win.
In the process, it has outscored its opponents, 148-0 this fall, and posted five straight shutouts dating back to last fall.
"I held my ground," explained the 14-year-old Joseph Valentino. "Any shutout means a lot to us. Our whole team is happy."
Though Parrott lost the handle five times, the Panthers only recovered two late fumbles.
After Tyrail Hawkins hurled a 31-yard scoring strike to his brother O'Mar, he followed with a 75-yard pitch and catch to Kevin Hagood. The touchdown passes were his third and fourth of the season.
In the second half, Tyrail Hawkins added a 5-yard touchdown run and Jeremiah Jackson completed the scoring with a 71-yard scoring gallop with 24 seconds left in the game.
The Parrott defense led by Valentino, Aujuwon Brown and Darrin Hambrick limited Powell to 169 yards total offense. For the hosts, Hagood recovered a first-quarter fumble and O'Mar Hawkins partially blocked a punt to set up Parrott's first score.
"The first touchdown pass was good," smiled the 13-year-old O'Mar Hawkins. "Tyrail got it to me and I did my thing. Tonight, they (Powell) played hard, but the difference was our defense stepped up."
"The two touchdown passes made me feel great," replied the 14-year-old Tyrail Hawkins. "The O-line did great, but they could do better. I thought both teams came ready to play."
"I was one of the guys that sat out early," lamented the 13-year-old Jackson, who finished with four carries for 76 yards. "I didn't play the first quarter. I promise, I learned my lesson. Their No. 35 (Hart) is the toughest guy we've seen. We continued to hit him hard all night and he kept coming."
Hart paced the visitors with 123 yards on a game-high 20 carries.
