BROOKSVILLE - It's been 10 months but the question lingers:
Who killed Dominique Lewis?
During the past months, the grief has quieted and the anger simmered, but there's no putting away the nagging question for Krizia Lawrence.
Her friend, Lewis, was discovered dead in the woods that border Brooksville Rock Road on Dec. 11. A CSX railway worker traced a foul odor to a flock of vultures.
Investigators say her body had been there more than 24 hours, but that this was not a case of skeletal remains. Signs of trauma on the body suggest homicide, but investigators have not elaborated further on a manner of death.
So now it's a matter of waiting.
Lewis, a 20-year-old St. Petersburg woman, was due to graduate from the Ultimate Medical Academy in February. Her classmate, Lawrence, said a candlelight vigil was held at that time to honor Lewis' memory.
There were many tears.
Lewis "didn't deserve this," Lawrence said.
The sheriff's office didn't have any fresh news to release about the investigation on Monday.
Lawrence is learning to cope with the loss, but there are little reminders every day that bring the memories flooding back.
It was Lewis who introduced her to rock music and two songs in particular take Lawrence back to happier days.
Asked if she was more angry or sad, Lewis had to think before answering, "half and half."
It's hard for her to comprehend how someone could harbor a hate so strong that they would kill. Leave your grievance with God and let him work it out, Lawrence said Monday.
She asks the person who killed Lewis to put himself in her shoes. The death affects so many more people than the victim, she said.
The killer "has no heart at all," she said.
