In the Oct. 5 Hernando Today letters to the editor, one of our Hernando county residents said McCain/Palin would continue the Bush legacy. What legacy?
I have to agree with Pat's assessment that we don't need the "bring 'em back dead or alive" politics of Bush. However, I don't agree that a McCain/Palin ticket would continue much of our current president's politics or programs. I think Sen. John McCain is his own man. I like that he is a maverick, and no matter where he finished in his class doesn't mean he is dumb. Breaking the rules and thumbing your nose at authority is sometimes necessary. I know people who have been very successful in both their business and personal lives who were "non-conformists" or mavericks. They, too, were not afraid to break the rules.
Sometimes you must stand up, no matter how distasteful, against the status quo.
Whoever the new president is, he will have his hands full. This rip-off of a "rescue package" was put together to fix a housing foreclosure/bank problem that started the cards to fall. It was created years ago by poor government regulations and an American public expecting to "have it all, afford it or not." It was compounded by the lack of interest in correcting the situation in recent years, mostly by Democrats. It makes this election a game changer.
I would agree with the majority of the letters and articles on Sunday's Opinion page that special interest groups, vocal minorities, the unbelievable amounts of money available and those willing to line their pockets, as well as elected officials impressed with the power and entitlement, have ruined our government. They may well bring down our democracy.
I hope that the maverick will stand up to this "business as usual" to make the changes necessary to keep our democracy going.
