NCT Suffers 'One of Those Nights'

Published: November 30, 2008

NEW PORT RICHEY - There are days when any team in any sport should sometimes forget about getting out of bed. That maybe is what the
Nature Coast Technical boys' basketball team should have done Saturday instead of playing River Ridge.
The 2-1 Sharks shot just 27 percent from the field in losing to River Ridge in the finals of the Beef O'Brady's Thanksgiving
Basketball Tournament, 40-33.
The Sharks, who defeated Clearwater Central Catholic 50-42 Friday night to reach the tournament finals, managed to hit on just 13-of-47 shots from the field (27.7 percent) in dropping the title game to the Royal Knights.
"When you hold a team to 40 points, you're supposed to win the game," said NCT Head Coach David Pisarcik. "What did we shoot tonight? 13-of-47? When you do that you're not going to win many games."
Whether it was the defense both teams played or cold shooting, the first-half score told the story as the two teams were tied 11-11 at the intermission.
NCT hit on just 4-of-18 shots in the half while holding River Ridge to 4-of-22.
The second half for Nature Coast was not much better while the Royal Knights connected on 9-of-16 second-half shots. Even with their free throw shooting, the Sharks had trouble, converting 5-of-13.
"This was just one of those nights," said Pisarcik. "We got good looks; we got the kind of shots we wanted. Teams have nights like
this, it's not rare, everyone has them."

Quick start

NCT jumped to an early 7-0 lead with 3:40 to go in the first quarter.
But from there until halftime, the Sharks made only one basket and two free throws for the remainder of the first half.
Then at the start of the third period, River Ridge went on a 10-2 run to lead 27-19 after three quarters.
The Sharks got within two points, 29-27, with 4:44 left in the game on a free throw by Cory Emerson.
A basket by Mike Adams made it 32-29 but the Royal Knights outscored NCT 8-4 the rest of the way to win the
game.
Cody Bagamary led River Ridge with 11 points while Adam Childs had 10 points and 15 rebounds.
NCT was led by nine points and eight rebounds from Michael Fields while Jake Meier and Emerson each added seven points.
Bagamary was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player while Daniel Neymour of Northside Christian, Meier and Adams of NCT and Childs and Alex Hill of River Ridge were also named to the all-tournament team.
Next week, the Sharks begin play in Class 4A, District 8 with a home game Tuesday night against Zephyrhills.
Coach Pisarcik is looking forward to that and forgetting Saturday night.
"Night's like this happen all the time," he added. "I'm just glad it happened early in the season to us. Now we'll just get ready for the Zephyrhills."
