SPRING HILL - The largest, strongest bone in Chad Stalton's body was shattered.
His femur was broken in three places in a car accident. He still walks with a noticeable limp, but his condition has improved during the past three months.
He attributes that to three months of physical therapy treatment at Action Potential Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine. Thursday was his last day.
"You feel like they really care and there's an attention to detail," he said of his therapist, John Allocco, and the others in the office. "It's a family atmosphere. Even though John's a (Florida) Gator and I'm a (Florida State) Seminole, he's like family."
Allocco, 33, has been a physical therapist for nine years. He served on the training staff at the University of Florida and Flagler College. He also has helped out at the local high schools. Many of the local athletes and coaches know him on a first-name basis.
His wife, Randi Allocco, is a registered nurse with a background in home healthcare. She has taken over the administrative side of the business. She keeps the books in order and takes care of the staff.
"People tend to feel more at home here," she said. "When they come here, they see the same trainer."
Action Potential opened January 2007 along Deltona Boulevard and a short distance near Cortez Boulevard. In September, the office got a lot bigger.
The owners wanted to knock down a wall and occupy the vacant space next door. Their space expanded from 1,000 square feet to 2,000.
"It's been a challenge," said John Allocco. "We started small to make sure we were solvent." There is one full-time physical therapist assistant on staff and a part-time assistant. There are two part-timer administrators who work the front desk during the week. Most types of insurance are accepted. The same goes for Medicaid.
Several of Allocco's patients are seniors, particularly tennis players from Timber Pines. Others are local employees who are referred through a workers compensation case manager. He also sees a number of high school athletes each week.
Patients have traveled from Floral City to Hudson to see Allocco.
Most of the machines in the facility strengthen core, back, arm and leg muscles. There is a Total Gym machine and a duel cable cross machine.
Every other Saturday, Allocco visits Oak Hill Hospital to see doctors and to ensure his referral list remains high. It is difficult otherwise to meet with physicians because they are so rarely sitting still behind a desk.
"You get personalized, one-on-one attention here," Allocco said. "There's no group therapy."
"Education is a big thing," he continued. "I want to make sure (patients) understand the full scope of their injuries and how to handle it when they leave here."
