BROOKSVILLE - Like a lot of coaches, Central wrestling coach Roy Reyes thinks it's a great thing to begin the season with a win.
And thanks to weight class wins by Kenny Supple, Vince Ramirez and Danny May, the Bears started off the 2008-09 season with a win Saturday night in the second annual Alan Solomon Wrestling Classic held at Central High.
The Bears easily won the 13-team event with 194 points, beating second place Harmony by 42 points. Clearwater Central Catholic finished third with 149, Hagerty was fourth with 122 and Mitchell rounded out the top five with 120 points.
"It was a good showing for the beginning of the season," Reyes said. "I really didn't know what to expect coming into this because most of the teams are from outside the area. It's good to be wrestling at home and we got a good head start to the season."
Overall, the Bears had four wrestlers make the finals with Supple winning at 130 pounds, Ramirez at 140 and May at 215.
Besides those three, David Supple made the finals at 112 but lost while Wayne Snell at 125 and Shawn Cadoret at 145 both took third place in the tournament.
Although his brother David lost his final to Ryan Hipil of CCC, 3-0, Kenny Supple, who qualified for the state tournament last year, beat Kevin Alexander of Harmony, 10-6.
"He's been a real workhorse and now he's got a lot more in the tank than his opponents," said Reyes. "I'm really proud of him because conditioning played an important part of the win.
"And since he's a senior, to win a tournament at home was a great thing for him."
The junior Ramirez pinned Billy Kostakis of Mitchell at 1:34 of the first period. The win helped Ramirez start the year off great after missing half of last season with a shoulder injury.
"It was great to see him on the mat tonight," said his coach. "With another kid, I might be surprised to see him on the mat, but not him."
In the other final with a Bear wrestler, the senior May pinned Brenden Ferguson of Wesley Chapel in 5:27.
Although Coach Reyes was happy for the win by May, he also said the football player has a ways to go this year.
"He looked real good, although he's still just in football shape," Reyes said. "But it's a real good motivation for him to be standing atop the victory stand tonight."
The next tournament for Central is in two weeks when the Bears host the Bears Dual Tournament.
"We really have high expectations and goals this year," said Reyes. "I told my team I wanted 14 medals tonight, but we weren't far off that."
