BROOKSVILLE - An author who battled cancer as a child and used the experience as inspiration for a children's book will be in Brooksville today.
R.J. Prieto, author of "Dewey's Christmas Adventure," will be at Rogers Christmas House from 1 to 3 p.m. The store is located at 103 Saxon Ave., off U.S. 41.
In the story aimed at readers age 9 to 14, Dewey Rabbit ventures to the North Pole and helps save his friend's life.
As a boy fighting leukemia in 1979, Prieto ended up in the hospital for three weeks during the Christmas holiday. He wrote the book to highlight the importance of the support network in helping him overcome the disease, according to a press release.
Prieto now lives in Wesley Chapel and has a son of his own. He started Elite Publishers to help authors tell their own unique stories.
