Published: November 9, 2008

Nazdar,

It's almost that time again - the election of community officers in January for the ensuing year. Seats up for election are president, treasurer and director. If you are interested, applications must be filled out and can be obtained at our post office on U.S. 41 near the yellow caution light from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Any cardholding member of the community is eligible to run.

The applications must be returned by no later than Nov. 17. For details, call Niki at 544-1113. She'll be glad to assist you, along with any other council member.

Don't forget. Tuesday, Nov. 11 is Veterans Day, which many organizations will be observing. Brooksville VFW Post 8713 and Ladies Auxiliary will have a service and flag presentation at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Tangerine Cove Nursing Home on Howell Avenue.

They will also present baskets filled with many needed items for the veterans there. They will be following an old VFW slogan, "Honor the dead, by helping the living." So, tell a veteran you know - thank you, say a prayer for those who have passed, pray for active ones to come home safe and soon. It's the land of the free because of the brave.

Rave reviews for local events

The Halloween Haunted Castle at the Masaryktown Community Hall was a success. Nearly 200 children enjoyed the Haunted Castle, games, hay rides, coffin rides and goodie bags. Many thanks to the wonderful volunteers from the Masaryktown Activities Committee (M.A.C.) and great folks from Sylvan Grove.

The barbecue dinner-dance on Nov. 1, held at Sylvan Grove, was a success with all funds going to 28 needy families. Two super ladies, members of Sylvan Grove and the M.A.C., took a big part in the organization of this event. Thank yous to Gladys Badowski and Susan Compton, who made the many baked goods, as well as a big thanks to Jan and Robert Gathje, also of the M.A.C., for their special help. Many thanks to Phil Rafferty - the disc jockey - and to Morgin Ciarcia, the songstress, all volunteers from both organizations, and especially those who attended and made this a beneficial event.

Next fundraiser at Sylvan Grove Clubhouse will be Thursday, Nov. 13 from 1:30 p.m. during their bingo session. Many fresh, homemade bakery items will be on hand for sale. Everyone is welcome, with proceeds going to the Christmas dinner. For more information, call 352-796-8397.

A Whirlwind Weekend

Carolyn Blaha had a whirlwind four-day weekend by joining her sister Elneta Spell in Leesburg. They went to Elizabethtown, N.C. for Elneta's 50-year class reunion from Elizabethtown High School. The reunion was enjoyed at two different locations at former classmates' homes. On Friday night, was held at the home of Dick and Tammye Glenn, with hamburgers and covered dishes. On Saturday night, they went to White Lake Community Center and enjoyed pulled pork and many side dishes. About 50 guests showed up - classmates, spouses or friends, checking out name tags - all had an enjoyable weekend.

Food donations needed

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church is helping more needy people weekly from their food pantry, especially these next two upcoming holiday months. Between the end of September and the beginning of October, they provided for 217 people consisting of 90 families. The numbers of those needing food rise each month! Anything you can donate will be a great help.

The food pantry is open every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon. All nonperishable goods can be dropped off there. Keep in mind they are still collecting items for our troops overseas, and the holiday packages will be going out soon. Needed items are: shampoos, deodorant, wipes, insect repellents, hygiene items, eye drops, hand sanitizers, flea collars, phone cards, healthy snacks, notepads, postage stamps, devotionals, etc. Whatever you can spare - they're doing more than we are with a lot less! P.S. Don't be shy to send a Christmas card or two.
