NEW PORT RICHEY - What started off as a fairly competitive football game, at least from Central's point of view, turned around rapidly for the Bears as they committed four turnovers in losing Friday night at the Jim Valentine Sports Complex to River Ridge, 24-7.
The loss was Central fourth in a row.
The Bears, who are now 3-6 on the year finish 1-4 in Class 4A, District 8, got off to a quick lead in the first quarter on a touchdown pass from Dallas Waugh to Steven Read on their first possession of the game.
But from then on, the Bears made too many mistakes as three interceptions and a lost fumble helped the Royal Knights control the game's tempo. With the victory, RRHS improved to 2-7 and finished 2-3in 4A-8.
"It's not that we didn't have chances, we did. But we made some costly mistakes and River Ridge took advantage of them," said Central High Head Coach Cliff Lohrey.

Quick start

The game started off great for the Bears when they forced River Ridge to punt after they made one first down on their opening possession of the game.
Then the Bears drove 75 yards in nine plays to score as QB Waugh hit Read with a swing pass down the right sideline for 26 yards and a touchdown with 2:57 left in the quarter. Nick Rosario kicked the extra point, 7-0 Bears.
But after that, Central did not get on the scoreboard the rest of the night as the River Ridge defense shut down the Bear offense. After the touchdown, Central managed just 113 yards of total offense the rest of the game and had the four turnovers.
The main example was tailback Austin Forte. In the first half, Forte gained 74 yards on 10 carriers. In the second half, he was held to minus-3 yards on three carries.
Following the only Central score, a 60-yard kickoff return by Mario Stewart helped set up a 47-yard field goal by Jack Paris that made it 7-3.
On the next Bears' series, Waugh threw the first of his three interceptions to Marco Custodio, who returned in to the Central 13.
Three plays later, Trevor Shoun scored from five yards out for a 10-3 Royal Knights intermission lead.
In the third quarter, River Ridge scored on their first series on a 7-yard scoring pass from Kenny Toce to Shane Allen. In the fourth quarter, the New Port Richey club marched 62 yards in 12 plays for their last score, a 6-yard run by Stavros Arianos.
In the end, the four turnovers by Central was the difference as Central gained 188 yards of total offense in the game to 184 for River Ridge.
The Bears now have one last home game this year as next Friday they take on Nature Coast Technical, who is now 9-0 on the year after beating South Lake, 40-24.
The idea of having an opportunity to perhaps halt NCT's hopes of an unbeaten season brought a small smile to Lohrey when asked about it.
"Yes, that would really be something if we could beat Nature Coast next week."
