Dan Barry

FORT PIERCE - It's been a tough four years for Springstead's Dan Barry. The senior swimmer has gone through four coaches in four years.
But that hasn't affected his performance in the pool.
At the Class 2A, Region 2 swim meet Friday at Indian River State College's Anne Wilder Aquatic Complex, Barry made it three consecutive 100-yard butterfly titles with a personal-best 52.97 performance and qualified for Saturday's state meet in Orlando.
"I really surprised myself," Barry said after the race. "I didn't take it 100 percent in prelims because if you know you're going to be in the top eight, you want to save it for the finals. I hadn't gone my best time (53.14) since sophomore year because that's when I stopped swimming year-round."
Barry finished second in the 50-yard freestyle with a 22.71 and should qualify for states in that event as well. As a sophomore, Barry won the region title and finished eighth at states. He didn't swim the 50-free last year.
The official state qualifiers will be released by the FHSAA today.
"He's an amazing swimmer. He's had to struggle all year long with the kind of swimming conditions we've had," said Springstead coach Will O'Lynnger. "He knows there are some things we can do to bring that down a little more. He's very focused right now. He's very confident. He needed that positive feel that he can do that. His last 40 yards were phenomenal. He was working hard, hard, hard – especially that last turn."
Barry's 50-freestyle and 100-butterfly events are in consecutive races – with a 15 minute break. He's done a good job all season juggling the two events.
"It's kind of tough (doing both events)," Barry said. "The 50-free is all sprint and there's only a short time gap between that and the 100-fly. You just have to do a little warm-down after the free and try to have enough energy to do your best in the fly."
Barry finished seventh in the 100-butterfly at states as a sophomore and ninth as a junior.
"I didn't know what to expect going into this year," he said. "I knew it would be my last year of swimming. I haven't been training in the high school offseason and I didn't know the coaches so all I could do was my best."
Barry's teammate, Angel Healy, finished 18th in the 100-yard breaststroke and 22nd in the 500-yard freestyle.
Central had seven swimmers in six individual events and two relays. Barrett Sheffield finished sixth in the 100-breast and still has a shot at earning a state berth. Last year, 1:05.73 made it to states and Sheffield turned in a time of 1:04.30.
"In prelims, I dropped three seconds (off district time0 which I thought was amazing," Sheffield said. "In the finals, I didn't really feel that well. I have a little kink in my neck and I didn't think I was going to do that well. But I dropped .39 off my prelim time. I'm very excited about it."
Sheffield was the only Bears' swimmer to make the championship finals but the girls 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay made the consolation finals, as did Emily Withington (200-yard IM, 100- breast) and Mary Alice McGeehan (50-free, 100-fly).
"This meet is a great experience for the kids," said Central coach Julie Withington. "There's a lot of high competition here. They're here to earn points for their team and to reach personal goals. They did a really good job here."
Hartsock makes final
At Friday's 1A-I Meet at Jacksonville-Bolles School, Hernando senior Corey Hartsock reached the championship final of the 100-yard breaststroke, coming in seventh (1:06.33).
Hartsock also competed in the 100-yard freestyle, tying for 12th with a 55.00. He, Jesse Lane, Roger Williams and Paul Wernicke came in eighth in the 200-medley relay (1:55.99).
Also, Hartsock, Lane, Wernicke and Jordin Williams swam a 1:44.04 in the 200-free relay, good for 14th. Lane came in 17th in the 100-fly (1:05.96) and 14th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:09.13).
The Hernando girls' team of Emily Antonini, Michelle Martin, Victoria Ketchum and Nicole Antonini finished 14th in the 200-free relay (2:02.69).
For Nature Coast, Victoria Loydgren posted a time of 28.71 in the 50-free (15th) and Alex Wigoda swam a 1:15.68 in the 100-breast (19th).
Sebastian Montagnino, Wigoda, James Foster and Joe MacGregor ran 15th in the 200-medley relay with a prelim time of 2:00.99, but were disqualified in the final for a stroke infraction.
