BROOKSVILLE - This time a year ago, the Central Lady Bears could only lament an opportunity just missed.

In 2007 Central finished one place short of advancing out of the Class 3A, District 3 Meet. Friday night at McKethan Lake Park, the Lady Bears earned redemption.

This time Central finished fifth in the 3A-3 Meet, good enough to move on to next Saturday's Region II Meet at Polk Community College. The top six teams and top 15 runners advanced.

"Absolutely wonderful," Central Head Coach Erin Courtney said. "It's nice to finally get there. It's a great group of girls and a tough district. To make it out like we did, I'm really happy.

"…We're going to try to get out (of regionals) in one of the six spots. We've been saying 'States in '08.' But we made it to regionals. There's no pressure. We're going to relax and have fun."

The Lady Bear totaled 136 as a team. Tampa-Wharton won the meet handily with a 37 tally. This year Springstead just missed moving on, coming in seventh (180).

For Central, sophomore Mikayla Bogulski had the best finish. She also paced the county runners with a 20th-place 20:44.

"It's amazing," Bogulski said. "We worked so hard this season. Our goal was to make it to regionals and states.

"I went out really fast. I tried to go after the top girls. Maybe that was not the smartest thing. But I think overall it was good to stay with them for the first mile."

Senior teammate Caroline Northup followed Bogulski in 25th (21:05). Completing the Lady Bear effort was Anna DeAngelis (28th, 21:17), Bryanna Eady (35th, 21:54), Melia Orrell (37th, 22:09), Devon Rennie (46th, 22:38) and Kady McCandles (57th, 23:08).

Springstead had three runners (Caroline Monzo, Mirelys Pizzaro and Taylor Tuomey) hobbled with injuries.

Freshman Kailey Genrich led the Lady Eagles with a 21:16 time, good for 27th place. Jaclyn White ran a 21:33 (32nd), Pizzaro 21:58 (36th), Sasha Spalding 22:41 (47th), Tuomey 22:45 (48th) and Monzo 24:56 (72nd).

"We just got hit with the injury bug at the end," Springstead Head Coach Joel Myers said. "The girls ran as hard as they could. It's disappointing of course. We were running so well in the middle of the year. But I'm still proud of them."
