BROOKSVILLE - Local health officials have known for years that services needed to be expanded on the county's westside, especially as the population there increased.
Help is on the way.
County commissioners have approved several staff recommendations designed to speed up construction of a new 41,000-square-foot health department on 3.5 acres adjacent to the Westside Government Complex off Forest Oaks Boulevard in Spring Hill.
Commissioners purchased the property in 2000 for the purpose of building a new health facility. State legislators had already set aside $14 million for the design, engineering, construction and equipping of the new building.
But several technical land use issues had to be resolved first.
That happened last week when commissioners authorized staffers to advertise for and set a public hearing to consider vacating any interest of the public on the east 60 feet of the site.
That property was dedicated on the subdivision plat for road right of way and is adjacent to the west boundary of the Berkeley Manor Wastewater Treatment Facility.
Board members also authorized the Hernando County Utilities Department to appraise the portion of the treatment facility property east of the new county health department property that is needed for drainage purposes.
The cost of that appraisal is yet to be determined.
The county and the health department have held discussions regarding the capacity of the property for that size of building, along with the requisite parking and drainage retention issues.
An opening day for the new health center has not been finalized.
Meanwhile, health department staffers recently finished settling into their new administrative offices at 15470 Flight Path Drive, the former Innovative Technology building, at the airport industrial park.
The relocation of the administrative offices was necessary to allow for additional services offered through the Nature Coast Community Health Center.
