BROOKSVILLE - Those seeking to honor the country's fallen service personnel this Memorial Day have a few local options.
Here's a rundown of some of the events:
- The Hernando County Round Table will sponsor a Memorial Day ceremony at 11:30 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park, 12254 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill. Guest speaker is Thomas G. Bowman, chief of staff for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Free hot dogs and soda will be available.
- Spring Hill Bible Church, 15449 Spring Hill Drive, will hold two services on Sunday, May 25, to observe Memorial Day. Morning service is at 10:30 a.m; evening service is at 6 p.m. There will be a salute to all veterans and current members of the Armed Forces. The evening worship service will feature members of the church's congregation singing patriotic songs and veterans sharing personal testimonies. Call: 544-5644.
- Hernando Beach Club will celebrate the holiday with a barbecue at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, May 25. Live from Chicago will provide the entertainment. Bring a chair for the outdoor event. The cost is $8 per person for members, $10 per person for guests. The club is open to all. For reservations or more information, call Bunni at 688-4976. - A Memorial Day ceremony is slated for 9 a.m. at the Masaryktown Cemetery on Squirrel Prairie Road. Bring a chair; refreshments will follow at the Community Center, 539 Lincoln Ave., Masaryktown. In case of rain, the services will be held at the Community Center. Call: Chris Kovacs, 799-0097.
- Florida Hills Memorial Gardens, 14354 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill, will host a Memorial Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 30. The event will take place the World War II monument in the Veterans Gardens and will include a flag raising, recognition by military and local dignitaries, the presentation of colors and presentation of the wreath. Lunch will be served after the ceremony at VFW Post 10209, 14736 Edward R. Noll Drive. Call the post at 796-0398.
- The Florida National Cemetery, 6502 SW 102nd Ave. Bushnell, will host its Memorial Day ceremony Monday. The speaker will be Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp. Special remarks will be given by Rear Admiral LeRoy Collins Jr., executive director of the Florida Department of Veterans' Affairs. Organizations with colors can participate in the massing of colors at the beginning of the program. Veterans organizations are asked to arrive by 8:30 a.m.

Government Broadcasting to feature Memorial Day programming
Hernando County Government Broadcasting air programming to honor veterans on Bright House Channel 622. The programs include personal stories and features about veterans young and old.
The programming will run from 9 a.m. to noon; 1 to 4 p.m.; and 6 to 11 p.m. on Monday, May 26.
They include:
- Veterans Voice, a locally produced program hosted by Nick Morana where veterans talk about their service experiences.
- Recon, produced by the Pentagon Channel, offers personal, behind-the-scenes stories.
- Face Behind The File is a program produced by the Veterans Administration that spotlights individual service members from World War II through today.
HCGB will record the ceremonies held at the Veterans Gardens of Florida Hills Memorial Garden and broadcast the program at 9 p.m. on Friday, May 30; 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 31; and 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 1.
HCGB will repeat the Memorial Day marathon programming block at 6 p.m. Monday, June 2.
