BROOKSVILLE - Hernando County's economy is more multi-faceted these days with its recent retail and industrial growth, but tourism remains a vital component.

That is why Hernando County Tourist Development is putting itself front and center during the 25th Annual National Tourism Week.

Last Sunday, residents could find copies of "Treasures of Hernando County" inside issues of Hernando Today. The maps remain available online at www.go2hernando.com.

"Our goal is to increase tourism knowledge and understanding ... for our residents and workforce to be aware of the cultural and social benefits created by travel and tourism," said tourism director Susan Rupe in a recent media release. "We encourage residents to learn more about the county and community and visit the area and see all that Hernando County has to offer."

The treasure map includes Rogers' Christmas House, Weeki Wachee Springs/Buccaneer Bay, Nobleton Outpost, Chinsegut Nature Center, Nature Coast Botanical Gardens, Boyett's Grove Citrus Attraction, Quarry Golf Course, Brooksville City Hall Art Gallery, Istachatta General Store and the local Welcome Center.

By visiting all 10 of the aforementioned tourist attractions, people are eligible to win prizes, which will be provided courtesy of Brooksville TV and Electronics, AAA Auto Club South and Wal-Mart.

There will be 10 gas cards given away to the lucky winners.

The grand prize is a Sony GPS system. All tourists must have their maps stamped at each location to become eligible. Entries must be received by the Hernando County Tourism Council by 5 p.m. Friday, May 30.

"I'm not sure all of our residents fully understand what we have in Hernando County," Rupe said. "We want to have our residents go out to those 10 locations and go see all of the activities there are to do in Hernando County."

If residents understand what the area has to offer, they would be more inclined to encourage their family and friends to visit from out of town, Rupe said.

The tourism office received a call from a local couple Tuesday. They told Rupe they never knew the area had a botanical garden or even where Istachatta was, she said.

Recent statistics show Hernando County's tourism industry employs more than 4,800 people, with a payroll of more than $60 million, according to the media release.
