I see where the attorney for the Spring Hill Fire Rescue has a new plan: Let's get rid of the voters and go directly to the Legislature.
I am sure that the off-duty personnel will show up in full turnout gear to impress Tallahassee with the strength of their argument. The true strength would best be shown at the ballot box. Although they aren't doing too well there either; think it is currently 0 for 2. Seems their philosophy is to keep having votes until they get the one they want. Seems the last two votes should have been some kind of hint that the voters don't want them independent.
Also, I am troubled by the statement that it would be a waste of money to have to educate the voters twice. Unless they are willing to fund the opposition side, I don't think any taxpayer's money should be spent to advocate only one side of an issue. A true education program would present both the pros and cons, in a fair and balanced manner.
The fire board commissioners seem to have forgotten that there is still the option to only have one vote, if the first vote is "no," there is no second vote. The fire board's attorney did throw a sop in stating that he still wants a referendum, but alas only on the amount that we can be taxed.
I call on the county commissioners to stand firm on the original proposal for an up or down vote on the independence status, with the possibility of a second vote on the tax levy. Also based on past performances I would suggest that seating for the hearing on June 17 be by lottery. Otherwise be prepared for the packing of the room by uniforms there to intimidate the commissioners. It has happened before, and will probably happen again.
Commissioners please stand firm on the original proposal. Let democracy work and the voters will speak.
