BROOKSVILLE - The driver who mowed down a man taking out his garbage seven months ago has been arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter, authorities said.
James Morris, 21, of Weeki Wachee, was driving a 2003 Ford F150 along Elgin Boulevard the morning of Oct. 10, 2007, according to a report by the Florida Highway Patrol.
Darrell "Hank" Newberry, 25, was holding a trash bag in his hand and standing at the corner of his driveway just before 6 a.m. when Morris' truck swerved over the center line and crashed into him, troopers said.
The vehicle came to a stop in a neighbor's yard. Morris was interviewed by investigators at the scene, but was not charged until Friday.
He was booked into the Hernando County Jail shortly before 3 p.m. Bond was set at $50,000.
Newberry left behind a fiancée and a 1-year-old son.
Both were in the house when the accident happened. His fiancée, Sheri Collins, heard the accident and ran outside to see Newberry lying unconscious by the truck.
Another neighbor who lives 13 houses away also heard the accident.
