I have a suggestion for Ted Rall. His May 1 column gave me a course of action ideal for a man of his deep convictions.
Since in his eyes, the evidence for torture is clear and violates the treaties against torture, his suggestion for the D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier to arrest President Bush and hold him for trial. After all, in Rall's thinking, the mere presence of Guantanamo Bay constitutes a form of torture, so it may be necessary for him to take direct action to bring the president to justice.
In Rall's eyes, I am sure that he sees the conspiracy protecting the president from arrest. Rall sounds like a man of action, and here is what I would suggest he do.
Gather all the evidence of the tortures being inflicted on the prisoners being held around the world and go to the northeast gate of the White House on the Pennsylvania Avenue side. Inform the officer that you are there to perform a citizen's arrest of the president.
I am sure that you will receive the highest level of cooperation once you show the evidence you have brought with you. Be sure to bring the deflated soccer ball as evidence of the extreme torture we inflict on those captured on the battlefield.
To emphasize your point I would suggest taking a couple of ex-POWs who were guests of the Japanese during World War II.
They can affirm the treatment they received at the hands of the kind and gentle Japanese captors and provide immediate comparisons with the treatment of those in the Guantanamo Bay prison.
