Lights Out For Lighthouse Christian

BROOKSVILLE - If you calculated the number of prep students attending Lighthouse Christian Academy and Hernando Christian Academy, the total probably would not exceed a couple of hundred kids.

But on Tuesday afternoon in the Class 1A, Region II quarterfinal baseball game held at the Lions' Den, HCA had enough solid performers to advance.

With junior right-hander David Rotteveel throwing a complete game and teammates Josh Romeo and Chip Harrell each driving in three runs, HCA eliminated Lighthouse Christian to reach Friday's semifinal round, 9-1.

"We're just short on talent," said LHC Head Coach Dwayne Burkhead. "We only have about 100 kids in the high school and it's hard to fill the team. They're playing football, basketball and baseball, so most of my guys have never played the game."

HCA is in that same position as Rotteveel doubles as the school's starting quarterback on the football team.

Rotteveel scattered five hits, fanned seven and did not allow a walk.

But Tuesday he was at his best as he threw 94 pitches in the game, 58 of them going for strikes.

"We played wonderfully and David (Rotteveel) pitched a gem," described second-year HCA Head Coach Scott Boer.

"He was focused, I talked to him today and gave him a scouting report of the things each hitter did and he was in the zone all day."

Rotteveel gave up a run in the first inning when Cory Stafford led off the game with a double and later scored on a ground out by Michael Danner.
