WILDWOOD - In the Dixie League AAA Majors (ages 11-12) District 6 All-Star baseball tournament, held this past week at Millennium Park in Sumter County, the Spring Hill American team had an outstanding run.
That is if you were to exclude any games played against South Lake.
In the four games SH American played in the double-elimination tournament that weren't against South Lake, the Hernando County squad went 4-0 and outscored their opponents 31-7.
But Sunday afternoon in the tournament final, the South Lake team beat Spring Hill American for the second time in two days, winning the district title with an 11-3 win.
Garrett Cole led South Lake two hits and four runs batted in; three of them coming in the sixth inning on a home run that broke open a close game.
Though Spring Hill American lost the title game, they still qualified for the AAA Majors (ages 11-12) State Tournament that begins July 11 in Ridge Manor.
Sore note
Things started roughly for American when starting pitcher Vito Tambasco came up with a sore arm and had to leave the game after two innings.
But South Lake, who had beaten American 15-3 on Saturday, snapped a 3-3 deadlock in the fifth inning with three runs. The Lake County squad followed by scoring five runs in the sixth.
"Once his arm starting hurting, we had to take him out," said SH American Head Coach Shawn Laferty about his starting pitcher. "That wasn't part of our plan and after that; we had to go in and out with different pitchers and that kind of ruined things."
South Lake scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings before Tambasco helped his club come back to tie it at 3-all in the bottom of the fourth.
With one out, Blake Laferty singled to center and moved to second on a wild pitch. Tambasco then lined a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence for a two-run homer. Austin Treverton followed that with a single, moved to second on another wild pitch, to third on a ground out to the pitcher by Josh Lopes and scored on an RBI single by Danny Schonborn.
But South Lake, who pounded out 13 hits against four different Spring Hill American pitchers, scored three in the fifth on run-scoring singles by Cole and Chandler Strawbridge and a fielder's choice by Clay Stansell.
Then in the sixth, Trenton Padgett hit a two-run homer and Cole followed it with a three-run shot to seal South Lake's title.
"I was hoping we would stay on a roll," said South Lake's skipper Mike Padgett. "But against these guys, I'm always worried and I would never take them lightly. And this is the fourth straight year we've gone to the state tournament."
Despite the loss, Spring Hill American advances to the state tournament, something that Coach Laferty is happy about.
"They just hit the ball a lot," said Laferty about South Lake. "If our pitching gets healthy, we should be alright. We have almost two weeks until the state tournament and we have some work to do."
