First CCA Charity Auction A Success

Published: June 29, 2008

BROOKSVILLE - Scott Jager knew it was going to be a good day Saturday.

The night before, a doctor donated his 2004 Lexus as part of Christian Contractor's Association's first charity auction.

It sold for $24,000.

It was still too early Saturday afternoon to know how many bids were made and how much money was raised, but Jager said the auction was every bit the success story he had been hoping for.

"Next month, we'll do it all over again," he promised. "We'll have more stuff."

His large stash of antiques was not included Saturday. He will make that available to bidders in late July.

Jager founded CCA nearly 20 years ago while living in Vermont. It was during his community outreach service following Hurricane Hugo that he decided he wanted to use his contracting skills for the less fortunate.

His charity organization builds wheelchair ramps for those who cannot afford it and does storm repairs in poorer neighborhoods.

People donate supplies and tools, but he and his crew cannot use them all. He thought about opening a thrift store, but instead opted for a monthly auction. Saturday was his first.

The CCA warehouse is located at 2009 S. Broad St., south of the Airport Industrial Park.

On Saturday, people bought cars, trucks, light fixtures, furniture, tools, bathtubs and a variety of supplies.

Many who turned out are veterans of such auctions, including Phillip Woodward.

"It was a good sale that went to a good cause," he said as he tightened the strap over the cement mixer he would be hauling. "It was so well-organized. There were no glitches. They were tremendous. I'll certainly be back."

Woodward also bought cabinets, gloves, paint supplies and fixtures. He loaded them into a trailer, which connected to the back of his Toyota Tundra.

Several items, including cars and tractors, were not sold Saturday, but will be available for future auctions.

"Everybody seemed to be into what we were doing," Jager said. "It's nice to have an auction inside a warehouse with air conditioning."
