Spring Hill American's Perfect Run is History

WILDWOOD - Well, no one's perfect.
It was just beginning to look like Spring Hill American might be just that, at least in AAA Majors (ages 11-12) All-Stars District 6 Tournament play. SH American had won its first three games in relative ease, although San Antonio put up quite a battle before succumbing in a seven-run sixth in Friday's game, averaging nearly 10 runs a game while playing nearly errorless in the field.
All that came to an end, however, in Saturday's semifinal against South Lake, and it was Danny Gonzalez who was the executioner. Gonzalez hit two home runs, a double and a single, driving in five runs, and pitched all five innings in South Lake's 15-3 five-inning triumph.
SHA's defeat left three teams remaining in the tournament, all with one loss. Since South Lake had not had a bye in the tournament as yet, it automatically got it, leaving SHA and San Antonio to battle in a possible elimination game Saturday, with a berth in Sunday's district final at stake.
"You have games like that," said SH American Head Coach Shawn Laferty. "It happens. They're a good ball club. We know that. They can hit."

Four in a row

South Lake, which fell in its district opener to Bushnell but hasn't lost since, got the game's first run on a Gonzalez solo home run in the second inning. It remained 1-0 until the fourth, when an SHA error and a hit batsman put two on base with Gonzalez at the plate once again. And once again, he drove the ball over the fence; a three-run shot that made it 4-0.
South Lake broke the game open in the fifth, the first nine batters each getting a hit, including four-consecutive doubles by Dallas Riffle, Joey Passino, Trenton Padgett (he had two doubles in the inning, with three RBI) and Chandler Strawbridge to start the frame. Garrett Cole added a two-run single as South Lake scored 11 runs on 12 hits.
Down 15-0, SH American broke through with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Vito Tambasco doubled in one run and scoring a second on a wild pitch and Danny Schonborn singling in a run, but it was far too little and way too late.
