Rabies Vaccinations Low In Quantity

Published: June 27, 2008

A limited supply of rabies vaccination is putting preventive inoculations against the virus temporarily on hold.

Post-exposure vaccinations will be prioritized while pre-exposure vaccination supplies will be limited to folks with an increased risk of coming into contact with the virus. These include rabies laboratory workers, animal control officers, veterinary staff and wildlife workers.

Normal supply levels are expected to return in July.

Individuals who are exposed to potentially rabid animals should immediately wash any wounds or contact sites with soap and water and immediately seek medical attention.

Common carriers of rabies are raccoons, bats, foxes and skunks. If affected by rabies, animals will display strange behavior including aggressiveness, staggering and heavy drooling or foaming.
