Hernando Today sports reporter Chris Bernhardt Jr. and news reporter Mike Bates were recently honored for their journalistic efforts during the annual Florida Society of Newspaper Editors convention in Orlando.
Bernhardt was awarded first place in sports writing for the article "Four-For-Four," which appeared in the Jan. 7, 2007, edition of Hernando Today.
The article featured Central High School swimmer Rae-Lynn Sheffield, who was named Hernando Today's Player of the Year for girls swimming for the fourth time in her four-year prep career. Bates took second-place honors for investigative reporting.
It was a series of stories published last summer that focused on government waste and was called "A Case For Reform."
"Chris and Mike deserve high praise for their work," Hernando Today Editor Chris Wessel said. "They both do a terrific job day in and day out, and it's nice to see them get recognized for their efforts."
