WILDWOOD - Vito Tambasco's two-run blast over the scoreboard in left field got Spring Hill American going in its AAA Majors (11-12 year olds) All-Stars District 6 Tournament opener against Sumter Monday at Wildwood's Millennium Park.
And once SH American got rolling, there was no stopping it.
A six-run second and a four-run third sealed the deal for SHA, which disposed of Sumter 12-2 in a game ended midway through the fourth inning.
"It was good, impressive baseball all day," said SH American Head Coach Shawn Laferty. "Vito Tambasco's home run in the first kind of set the tone.
"They play smart and they can hit. They play good baseball. Thing is, the bottom of our order scored a lot of runs for us. That's big."
Tambasco's homer came with Evan Webster, who reached base on an error, at second with two out. But Webster was just as impressive in the second, when he relieved Tambasco with the bases loaded and no one out. Webster proceeded to strike out the next two batters and get the third on a grounder back to the mound.
SHA pitchers would allow just three hits in the game, two by Kenneth Maxwell III.
A similar situation awaited SHA in its half of the second, with two walks and a bunt single by Josh Lopes loading the bases with no one out. But SHA took advantage of its opportunity with a run-producing ground out by Ryan Keith, followed by a two-run base hit by Matthew Rhineberger, a wild pitch that scored a run, an RBI ground out by Brandon LaMondra, and a run-scoring double by Tambasco.
Lopes and Webster each singled in runs in the third for SHA, with its final two runs scoring on wild pitches.
Lopes, Webster and Lopes each had two hits in the game.
The win earned SH American a second-round bye on Tuesday, with a game against the Spring Hill National/Bushnell winner set for 8 p.m. Wednesday.
