The Spring Hill Ponytails (ages 11-12) All-Stars have taken on a motto as they head into the District 4 Tournament today: 'One Team.'
Spring Hill takes on West Pasco at 8:30 p.m. at the Oakridge Park in New Port Richey.
The roster features Brooke Fischbach, Casey Vsetula, Louisa Disi, Katherine McCarthy, Nicole Morolla, Rayanna Riecss, Anna Poholek, Kaitlyn Glynn, Kayla Harvey, Tianna Shirley and Alexis Ferraro.
"On this team there are no stars," Coach Kevin Riecss said. "It's a band of girls that just play well together."
Riecss painted the picture of a well-balanced team, with quality pitching, solid defense and strong hitting up and down the line-up.
He'll need a great performance out of his team to survive the five-team, double-elimination tournament. The rest of the field includes Hernando, East Pasco and Wesley Chapel.
The district champion will move onto the State Tournament, which starts July 3 in Belleview. Two years ago, Spring Hill won the state championship at this level. Last year, Spring Hill went 1-2 in the district.
"We know our first game against West Pasco is going to be a tough game," Riecss said. "They're the defending district champions.
"We came up against Brooksville (in the regular season). We know they're a very strong team. We know every game is going to be a fight but our kids are going to be ready for it."
Hernando: improve on last year
In last year's district tournament, Hernando finished 0-2. This year's head coach, Danny Harvey, would like to see that change.
"We just want to improve on last year," Harvey said. "I know we didn't win a game last year. If we improve on that I think that's something."
His roster includes Ta'Shylla Brockington, Sierra Cannon, Adriana Goodwin, Danielle Harvey, Jordan Huggins, Jenise Knowles, Allison Lucky, Tana McDaniel, Courtney Riddle, Jade Rivers, Ann-Marie Rojero and Ashley Sims.
Hernando plays its first game tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. against Wesley Chapel.
Coach Harvey believes he has a deep pitching staff, including Cannon, Lucky, McDaniel, Riddle, Rivers and Rojero.
"We're deep in pitching this year and I wouldn't be scared to start any one of them against any team down there," Harvey said.
Harvey said he has worked on hitting in preparation for the tournament, while defense is probably the team's strength.
