BROOKSVILLE - If the green revolution is going to succeed, neighbors have to band together to learn and garner motivation from each other.
That's the motivation behind Friday's open house at Green World Path Inc., said company owner Ray Nielsen.
The company, which opened its plant in January, produces nontoxic agricultural supplies for farmers and backyard gardeners alike to use as alternatives to traditional fertilizers and pesticides.
The open house that begins at 10 a.m. and slated to run through 8 p.m. will likely help sales, Nielsen acknowledged.
But the event's purpose is bigger than that, he said. The free seminars, tons of mostly organic food and live music are meant to help visitors learn about and celebrate environmentally friendly ways to live. The goal is to create a "synergy" among like-minded local people and organizations, he said.
Admission is free. Nielsen, a Hernando County resident for 36 years, says he has spent some $30,000 on the event.
"We really want to be a shining star in Hernando and surrounding counties," said Nielsen, who helped author the National Organic Program passed by Congress in 2002. "We want to have a strong base here, and that's what this is all about."
Some 30 vendors from Hernando and Pasco counties, including local organic growers, will set up booths. Other exhibitors include the Hernando County Extension Service and the Spring Hill Botanical Gardens.
Among the featured speakers are author Sue Walsh, who has published books on native plants and butterfly gardens, and Elaine Fortier, a master gardener who specializes in organic nurseries.
The Green Bean organic market in Spring Hill is catering the event. The menu includes barbecue chicken, a variety of salads and even organic wine. Local musician Dan Princeton will play Top 40 hits beginning at 5 p.m.
Nielsen said he especially encourages those curious about organic growing and the green movement to come by.
"It will open people's eyes," he said.
